Without Automation Testing

Did you know that software testing and quality assurance are expensive; they accounted for an average of 23-35% of overall IT spending as of 2019. With Workday, you are not going to just be testing twice a year for updates

You will need to run comprehensive testing on a daily basis based on configuration changes you are making or perhaps on a sprint completion basis if you bundle your configuration changes into sprints

Most often because testing is so time-consuming and manual you will either have to allocate a lot of time to it OR you will take shortcuts and end up not testing all of the necessary scenarios. This is the ‘cross your fingers’ approach to testing and NOT a recommended practice.

Testing in Workday

Testing is particularly important in Workday because of the interconnected nature of much of what we are reconfiguring or enhancing.

A simple change to a condition rule can (depending on what business processes it is used in) require a whole package of test scripts, documentation of results, and plenty of time and effort.

Some business processes have many different variable paths depending on the object. An example might be the Change Job Business Process.

Change jobs will often require testing with scenarios such as US Promotion, US Demotion, US Lateral Move, US Executive Transfer, Foreign Office Transfer, Data Change, and many more.

Presence in multiple countries, different classes of workers, different business units or companies, or cost centers may require different testing scenarios and scripts.

Automation testing frees up time to do more productive and interesting work in your Workday tenant.

Automation testing ensures that testing scripts/scenarios are followed exactly. The testing tool can’t make a mistake as long as the scenarios are created by you correctly.

The scenarios are, of course, reusable and configurable so that they can keep pace with your ever-changing needs.

Automation Testing can work in the background while you are doing other work, it can be scheduled for a time when demands on the Workday tenant are lighter.

Testing Use Cases

Genie Automation Testing can be used prior to Open Enrollment to ensure that all of the meticulous creation of Benefits Plans and Package and eligibility rules for the same are correct and work the way your organization intends them to.

Genie AutomationTesting can be used in end-to-end testing in Recruiting. It can even create dummy candidates and candidate homes-one of the most onerous parts of testing in Workday Recruiting.

What about using Genie for the Merit Process? A critical process that absolutely has to be as close to perfect as you can make it before you roll it out to your employee base.

What about Performance? Another great functional area where Genie can help!

Using Genie

Genie is especially useful for volume testing. Imagine having to manually hire 100 candidates and how much time that would take. You could use an EIB to load them but that takes a lot of time and effort as well.

You can tell the Genie tool to create 100 positions, hire 100 workers, contract 100 contingents, or whatever you need for your testing scenarios.

Maybe you want to use the User Acceptance Testing as part of your training and skills enhancement. Use Genie to set up the scenarios such as quickly creating 100 positions that you are going to edit or hire into for the more involved scenarios.

Genie doesn’t have to replace UAT it can supplement it and do a lot of the volume work for you so you can concentrate on the more interesting scenario-based UAT which can function as change management and training and auditing processes.
